Your Vision Health
Diabetic retinopathy happens when high blood sugar levels damage blood vessels in the retina, and can lead to bleeding and swelling inside the eyes. It's the leading cause of blindness in working Americans. Effective treatments have been developed to prevent visual loss. Early detection of diabetic retinopathy can be achieved through camera screening in the 21 locations of the Christus primary care offices in East Texas.
Macular degeneration begins in the center of the retina called macula, and can bleed behind it or cause atrophy. It's the leading cause of blindness in senior Americans. Effective treatments have been developed to prevent or attenuate visual loss. Home monitoring devices are available for early detection of macular bleeding.
Both Dr. Rebecca Jones and Dr. Ming Lu are fellowship-trained retina specialists. Dr. Ming Lu participated in the early research of these new treatment modalities in the 90's, which have become the mainstay of therapy now for both diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration (anti-VEGF), as well as for other retinal vascular diseases, such as retinal vascular occlusions and retinopathy of prematurity.
